Officer Truong Thai, 49, was fatally shot after attempting to gain compliance from the suspect, 24-year-old Tyson Hampton, who was sitting in his car on the street.
Officer Truong Thai and another officer encountered an armed man in a vehicle near Flamingo and University Center Drive, Lombardo said. The suspect opened fire and the officers fired back, Lombardo said. Thai and a civilian were hit, he said.
Responding Bristol officers were fired on by the suspect outside of the residence.
"While the full evidence has not yet been made public, when it is released, it will clearly show that if the officers had been properly trained and followed the law, Gabby would still be alive today," said McConkie.
"I'm so deeply sorry. My condolences for saving me," an emotional Diana Flores said. "I'm so sorry. They didn't deserve that. They were trying to help me."
The deputies were responding to a domestic disturbance in the Birch River area around 5 p.m., Nicholas County Sheriff William F. Nunley said.
Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said Officers on Thursday morning were responding to a domestic violence call at a gas station in the area when the shooting occurred.
"Officer Caleb Ogilvie, 35, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic shooting at the Covington Farm and Fuel Monday afternoon. On behalf of the City of Covington Police Department, I want to express my gratitude for the incredible outpouring of support from the residents of Covington and Alleghany County,” Chief Christopher Smith said.
The City of Covington Police and Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office responded to an alert of the suspect's “erratic and escalating actions in the building,” police said.
According to police, one of the officers saw a man attempting to dismember a female body that had been decapitated.
