Springfield Police say that during the gub grab attack, the suspect fired two rounds. One hit his own hand. The other hit Perez's truck.
"When the officer said, 'Can you help me with my tourniquet?' I was like, 'Absolutely, I can help you with your tourniquet.' It was really useful to have that knowledge from my dad," 17-year-old high schooler Ava Donegan told reporters.
Other officers were eventually able to carry the injured officers away. They were taken to University Hospital for treatment.
Otto and Anderson Ortiz were in their home when they noticed their dog was barking at the window. That led them to realize the officer was being attacked outside.
Dash camera video shows the suspect struggling with the officer as she attempts to subdue and handcuff him. The video shows passing motorists stopping in the road and coming to the officer’s aid.
Some Living Word Harvest churchgoers were nearby, hosting a Labor Day barbecue in the park. Pastor Lawrance Garcia says he heard a gunshot, and rushed to check if Officer Larry Barnhill was okay.
Deputy K. LeMelle was parked on the side of the road monitoring traffic around 2 a.m. when her patrol vehicle was struck from the rear by a commercial work vehicle after the driver veered onto the shoulder.
On Sunday, June 12, at approximately 5:24 p.m. a call came in about several people stranded in water just east of Beer Can Island (Longboat Key) after their boat capsized. The HCSO Aviation Unit first flew over the scene and confirmed a boat was upside down in the water, with several people swimming around it.
"The struggle continued, at which point several passing motorists stopped to assist the injured officer by providing medical aid and restraining Du until additional law enforcement personnel arrived," the CHP said.
