After multiple requests by officers demanding the suspect put down his firearm, officers discharged their guns and struck the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
It happened around 6:15 p.m. when police said the detective was carjacked by three armed suspects.
Police say this started at the Circle K as a 911 call from a woman locked inside a bathroom. She said her boyfriend had roughed her up. When the officer arrived, investigators say the boyfriend, 24-year-old Calvin Brockington, got out of his car and opened fire.
About 3 a.m. Saturday, the two officers were driving to a report of gunfire. The officers said a man stepped in front of their car, then walked to the passenger side and pointed a gun at the officers.
Santa Fe officers located the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The suspect fled in the vehicle onto I-25 northbound in the southbound lanes. The crash occurred in the northbound lane of I-25.
Police say shortly after 10 p.m., an off-duty rookie officer who was on his way to work stopped at a traffic light in his personal car. Two suspects walked up to the officer and tapped on the driver’s side window with a gun. That’s when the officer got out of the car and one of the suspects started firing at the officer, striking him in the shoulder.
"We are here because our businesses and our residents tell us they are frightened and they want to know what we're going to do about it," said Maplewood Mayor Marylee Abrams.
Officer Shane Bartek was reportedly approached by the female suspect in the parking lot of his apartment building. The suspect was armed with a gun, Bartek fought her, and the officer was shot twice and killed.
Police say since mid-August, more than 40 Uber and Lyft drives have been robbed or carjacked with 12 in just the last seven days.
Officers learned the victims had been carjacked at gunpoint by two men wearing shirts with the word “POLICE” written on the front, Burbank police said.
