SHOT Show: 'Top Shot' Michelle Viscusi
Eighteen competitors will vie for "Top Shot" honors beginning today (Feb. 14) with the debut of Season 4 of the History Channel reality series. POLICE Magazine spoke with one of the shooters, Michelle Viscusi, at SHOT Show 2012. Michelle is an Army reservist who works with the Border Patrol in southern Arizona.

Springfield's XD(m)-9 5.25
At first glance, Springfield Armory's XD(m)-9 5.25 pistol may be viewed as a pistol for competitive shooters. The company did indeed seek design input from champion shooter Rob Leatham. However, it's a viable option for police service. It's excellent ergonomics, low recoil, and high cartridge capacity would be especially useful in tactical operations. Springfield Armory XD(m)-9 5.25 Pistol
Springfield recently introduced yet another version of the XD(m) designed for action pistol competition shooting, and I believe it is equally adaptable to law enforcement purposes. The XD(m)-9 5.25 was designed with the input of champion shooter Rob Leatham and is intended to give competitor shooters everything they need to compete right out of the box.

Pistol Drill: El Presidente
Rob Letham, a competitive shooter sponsored by Springfield, demonstrates "El Presidente," a pistol-range drill. The shooter fires two shots apiece at three targets 10 meters away, then reloads and fires another six shots at the three targets. The drill, which was developed by Jeff Cooper in the 1970s, tests drawing and reloading.

Most academy and qualification training with firearms is devoted to shooting at stationary silhouettes at 25 and 50 yards. This isn't the real world. In the real world, the bad guy is pumped full of adrenaline and is mobile.

Police firearms instructor Chris Cerino came in a close second on the weapon skills competition TV show "Top Shot" on The History Channel. The show required contestants to prove their skills in everything from muzzle-loading muskets and modern pistols to slingshots and throwing knives.

Chicago Officer Competes For 'Top Shot' Honors
Chicago Police Officer Tara Poremba is one of the 16 contestants on the History Channel's "Top Shot" shooting competition. Poremba was the first female in agency history to become "Top Gun" of her graduating class and was awarded "Top Gun" of the FBI Firearms Instructor School.
