LAPD Clears DNA Evidence Backlog
Information provided in the kits from the original backlog has resulted in 521 matches in a national database of known offenders. There also have been 41 "case-to-case hits," some of which found serial offenders or an unknown suspect who has committed other crimes.

DNA Match Ensnares 'Grim Sleeper' Serial Killer In Los Angeles
Franklin is thought to be the "Grim Sleeper" killer who began killing women in 1985. The deaths have been linked via DNA collected from the bodies of the women, who were sexually assaulted and often left for dead in alleys and covered in debris with gunshot wounds to the chest from a small-caliber gun.

A progressive type of testing that separates male DNA profiles from those of females is helping the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office start solving sexual assaults and other crimes that previously yielded inconclusive results. The new male-specific DNA test zeroes in on minute amounts of biological evidence, such as saliva, skin cells or a trace of semen.
