Gang members on the street and inside prisons acquire edged weapons to use in close-quarter attacks on rival gang members or law enforcement officers. Street gang members typically will use fixed-blade knives, daggers, folding knives, butterfly knives or other utility tools, while inmates fashion their own jail-made shanks and other weapons from boot reinforcements, bed wiring, and other materials. Prison Shanks
The jail-made "shank" is fashioned from this material by sharpened by scraping the metal on concrete floors. A handle is fashioned from paper or cloth. Since the length of the shank is small, the handle is often held in the palm of the fist with the blade protruding from between the middle and ring fingers like a push dagger.

Wash. Man Stabbed 159 Times Before Officer Stops Assailant
Officer Joel Hansen acted within procedure, when he fired two shots, striking and killing Yeuri Acevedo Cisneros, 27. Hansen captured the graphic footage of the attack on Julio Cesar Zamora-Cortes, 21, on his cruiser's video camera.

Three 16-year-old boys had robbed a 41-year-old woman of her cell phone and some personal items before being confronted by officers. One boy then grabbed, and stabbed, the officer.

Officer Ends Confrontation With Knife-Wielding EDP Teen Peacefully
After responding to an EDP call, Scranton (Pa.) PD's Officer Rocco Cipriano parked and began walking toward the residence. A neighbor stopped him and said the girl had been outside of the house carrying a butcher knife and told the neighbor she would kill the cops if they came.

Using a 10-inch steak knife, John Stolarz walked into the Chase branch near Madison Square Garden shortly after noon on Thursday, and demanded "fifties and hundreds." Stolarz left, when a teller told him the bank didn't have the cash.

The three Marines and Army private who were about to be deployed to Afghanistan helped the sergeant get the 19-year-old man into custody. Police had responded to a call of a man "brandishing a sharp instrument and threatening citizens."
