Officer Paralyzed in Shooting Now Working to Return to Patrol
Patrolman James Kuzak Jr. was shot and paralyzed from the waist down when he responded to a home invasion robbery. But he hasn't let his injuries keep him from working to regain the use of his legs and rejoin law enforcement.

Body Armor: Protecting Those Who Serve
To date, only 60% of agencies require officers to don body armor on duty. In an effort to increase those numbers and ultimately save lives, the Bulletproof Vest Partnership, which reimburses up to 50% of a vest's purchase price, now requires agencies receiving funds to have a written mandatory wear policy for uniformed patrol officers.

Police Deaths Fall 43% In First Half of 2012
The number of line-of-duty deaths fell precipitously during the first half of 2012, as law enforcement agencies focused on officer safety measures. Through June, 53 officers lost their lives on duty compared to the 94 who were killed through the same period of 2011, a 43.6% drop.
