Officer Who Responded to Joplin Tornado Dies from Lightning Injuries
Officer Jefferson "Jeff" Taylor, who was struck by lightning on Monday, May 23, while on tornado disaster response duty in Joplin, passed away at a hospital here on Friday. He was 31 years old. He worked for Riverside, a suburb on the north side of Kansas City.

Lightning struck the area near where Officer Jeff Taylor, 31, was riding an ATV, after transporting a fire commander back to a command post. Officer Taylor was transported to a Springfield hospital and treated for burns and other injuries.

St. Louis Officer Disarmed, Shot With Own Gun
The officer arrived at the 5200 block of St. Louis Avenue at about 1 a.m. Tuesday to find a man who had been stabbed. The officer entered the home and chased the suspect, who was able to wrestle the officer's gun away from him and fire one shot at him.

The encounter occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on New Year's Day at a Shell gas station, after the subject told the officer to, "Shut Up." St. Louis PD's Officer Dustin Ries was off duty and providing security from a substation on the property.
