A JC Penny’s loss prevention employee told officers Jenkins put a package of t-shirts in his backpack and left the store without paying.

Officer Josh Baker approached the Camaro and learned the owner of the car was not the person driving, police said. The driver fired at Officer Baker, striking him, and he fired back, striking the suspect, who drove off and crashed.

Shortly after 2:45 a.m., officers responded to a reported domestic violence disturbance, according to Escondido police. Officers learned at the scene that a man involved in the disturbance left the home with "a high-powered rifle," the department reported.
