Calif. City Considers Fines to Combat False Alarms

To offset the cost of police response to false alarms, the Bakersfield (Calif.) Police Department has proposed an ordinance that would implement escalating fees for false alarm response. In 2010, 97 percent of the Bakersfield PD's 17,725 alarm calls in were false. Police responded to 10,115 calls, which cost the department more than $1 million.

66 San Jose Officers Turn In Badges

The San Jose (Calif.) Police Department lost 66 young officers, who turned in their badges Thursday in the city's first-ever police layoffs. The cuts brought the force from 1,271 to 1,106 officers, which is less than two decades ago, when the city had 200,000 fewer people.
