As Deputy Shoemate approached the intersection of Route Y and Rabbit Head Road, he entered into the oncoming lane of the highway to try and pass the firetruck ahead of him and crashed into an SUV. The driver of the SUV was seriously injured.

New Jersey Officer Pronounced Dead After Patrol Vehicle Wreck

It is not clear whether the accident was the cause of his death, or whether the officer, who was 41, suffered a medical emergency before the 10:50 a.m. crash.

Some Churches Commit to Stop Calling the Police

The churches that commit to ending their use of police resources are training members in alternate responses to danger. Torbett said at First Congregational, church leaders have invited experts from several nonprofits to train members on de-escalating mental health crises, and on self-defense in the case of a violent person at the church.
