Wanted Man Throws Dog at Albuquerque Officer, Then Flees

A man wanted on felony warrants threw a small dog at an Albuquerque Police officer Monday (May 5, 2025) while trying to escape arrest.

The Albuquerque officer was questioning the man and asked for his ID. The man later identified as Bobby Chavez, was wanted on felony warrants.

Body camera video shows the man pick up and pet a dog that appears to be a Yorkshire terrier. When the officer attempts to arrest him, the body camera video shows the man throw the dog at the officer.

Police say Chavez, 41, ran into a nearby apartment and briefly detained a female resident.

She was able to escape, the Albuquerque Police said in a Facebook post.

The man was taken into custody by the APD K-9 unit.

Bobby Chavez now faces his original felony warrants in addition to new charges including false imprisonment and battery upon a peace officer, police said.
