Texas Deputy Killed by Debris from Vehicle at Traffic Stop

A Dawson County (Texas) Sheriff’s deputy was killed Tuesday when he was struck by debris from a passing vehicle while working a traffic stop.

Dawson County Sheriff’s deputy Jessie Perez, 42, was conducting a stop in Lamesa around 12:30 p.m. when he was hit by the debris from a passing commercial vehicle, the Texas Department of Public Safety reports.

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office reports that Deputy Perez was transported to a Lamesa hospital where he died a little more than an hour after he was injured.

Deputy Perez served with the sheriff’s office for eight months. He was a councilmember in O’Donnell, a firefighter with the O’Donnell Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Lynn County EMS team, KCBS reports.
