Suspect Dies in PIT Maneuver Crash During Georgia Pursuit

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says the chase started in Columbia County after deputies performed a welfare check on a man asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle in a Krystal restaurant parking lot.

A suspect was killed Monday night in Richmond County, Georgia, after sheriff’s deputies used a PIT maneuver to end a pursuit.

The vehicle hit a guardrail and flipped, a photo from the scene published by WRDW shows.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says the chase started in Columbia County after deputies performed a welfare check on a man asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle in a Krystal restaurant parking lot.

When deputies made contact with the driver, they say the driver appeared intoxicated. The deputy also says he noticed a burnt tinfoil on the driver`s lap.

According to deputies, the driver accelerated away and the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle as it turned south onto Bobby Jones Expressway.

The pursuit entered Richmond County and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office took over the pursuit on Bobby Jones Expressway just past Mike Padgett Highway.

The Richmond County deputies performed the PIT maneuver to end the pursuit.

According to the coroner’s office, the driver was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:45 p.m.
