A suspect is dead after shooting a Philadelphia police officer in his ballistic vest Thursday afternoon in Northeast Philadelphia.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the incident began around 12:24 p.m. when officers saw a man who was running through traffic, 6ABC reports.
The man was put in the back of a police vehicle for transport to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. He was not handcuffed, Bethel said, because he was going voluntarily.
After getting out of the vehicle at the hospital, the suspect turned and attacked the officers, and soon the officers were down on the ground with the man.
During that attack the suspect grabbed the officer's duty weapon and shot the officer just an inch above the base of the vest.
The officer's partner then shot the suspect multiple times. The suspect was taken to Einstein Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The officer who was hit, and his partner - who was not shot - were taken to Temple Hospital for treatment. Both have since been released.
Names of the officers involved have not been released.
