During a Tuesday night address to a joint session of Congress, President Donald Trump said he had signed an executive order establishing a federal death penalty for anyone who kills a police officer.
The death penalty discussion came as Trump was paying tribute to slain NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller and honored his widow Stephanie, who attended the speech.
Officer Diller when he and his partner approached a parked suspicious vehicle in March 2024.
The suspect in the killing of Officer Diller, Guy Rivera, 34, has been charged with first-degree murder.
