A 37-year veteran of the Memphis Police Department died Monday after experiencing a medical emergency on duty.

The Memphis PD said on Facebook that Officer Charles Cathey joined the agency as a Police Service Technician in 1987. He graduated from the training academy and became a sworn officer in 1988.

A witness told Fox 13 that Officer Charles Cathey “sat on the sidewalk” then fell and “was gone.”
The Memphis PD said on Facebook that Officer Cathey joined the agency as a Police Service Technician in 1987. He graduated from the training academy and became a sworn officer in 1988.
“Throughout his career, Officer Cathey served in various roles, including the North Precinct Bravo shift, Fraud and Document, Crime Response Bravo shift, and most recently, Crime Scene Investigation Bravo shift. His contributions were invaluable, and he played an integral role within our department,” Memphis PD said.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young issued the following statement on X:
“It is with a heavy heart that I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of fallen Officer Charles H. Cathey. He dedicated 37 years of his life to serving our community, leaving a profound impact on countless individuals. As we process this loss, let's support his loved ones and the Memphis Police Department. Officer Cathey's commitment to our city will never be forgotten. The impact he made on Memphis will not fade and will continue to inspire us all. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace, Officer Cathey, your commitment to our community lives on in all of us.”
