An active shooter opened fire in a Madison, Wisconsin Christian School Monday morning killing two people—a teacher and a student—and injuring or wounding 7 more. The suspected shooter is dead.

Madison Police officers responded to a shots fired call from a staff member at Abundant Life Christian School around 10:57 a.m. Inside the K-12 private school, they found the suspect deceased, reportedly from self-inflicted gunshot. The suspect reportedly is a 17-year-old female.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said responding officers did not fire a shot. He added that he would not speculate on the suspect’s cause of death.

Barnes said after finding the suspect deceased, the responding officers quickly transitioned to providing first aid for the injured and wounded. He added that the Madison PD’s training facility is 3 miles away from the school and the department’s Special Event Medical Team were in training at the time of the attack.

The chief said the medical team left training immediately and responded to the school. They worked with fire department medical personnel to render aid and get the seven patients transported to local hospitals.

Injuries and wounded suffered by the seven patients ranged from life-threatening to minor, Barnes said. Two are reportedly in critical condition.

Multiple public safety agencies from the area responded to the school, according to Barnes. He thanked them all for their help.

A 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene where the suspect’s body was found.
