A McNairy County, Tennessee, Sheriff’s deputy working part-time as a Selmer police officer was shot and killed Saturday responding to a call about a suspicious person. The suspect was also killed in the incident.

The slain deputy and officer has been identified as Rick Finley, Fox 13 Memphis reports.

Finley responded to a call about a suspicious person just after 3 p.m. Saturday.

Selmer PD said Holmes tried to enter another home on the street before firing several shots into one of its doors. Officer Finley then confronted Holmes in a driveway across the street from the home, where the suspect attacked the officer and shot the officer several times, killing him.

A second officer, identified as Lt. Ron Pilkington, arrived moments later and "was able to return fire, killing the suspect," Selmer PD said.

The incident is under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
