A Fresno, California, Police officer was shot and wounded in an ambush Saturday night. The suspect is dead.
Chief Mandy Casto told KCRA officers were investigating a shot detection system alert at the time of the attack.

The ambushed sergeant was sitting in his patrol unit when he was attacked. Even though he had been shot, he began a pursuit of the suspect vehicle.

The ambushed sergeant was sitting in his patrol unit when he was attacked. Even though he had been shot, he began a pursuit of the suspect vehicle. The chase was only approximately a block when the suspect crashed.
The suspect then got out of his vehicle and began firing again. The wounded officer and two other patrol units returned fire, mortally wounding the suspect.
The wounded officer was hit in his lower body and is in stable condition.
