2 Phoenix Officers Wounded in Shooting, 1 Critical

“One officer was saved by his ballistic vest,” Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan said.

Two Phoenix Police officers were shot and wounded Tuesday while responding to an auto burglary call in the central part of the city. One is in critical condition and reportedly fighting for his life and the other is stable.

A suspect—identified by police as Saul Bal, 41—is in custody. He faces charges of attempted homicide.

Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan said the two officers responded to someone breaking into a vehicle, AZ Family reports.

The suspect fled. A foot pursuit ensued and the officers were shot, police say.

“One officer was saved by his ballistic vest,” Sullivan said.
