Indiana Deputy Critically Wounded in Gunfight, Suspect Killed

After the crash the suspect exited his vehicle and the suspect and the deputy were hit in an exchange of gunfire.

A Newton County, Indiana, Sheriff's Deputy is in critical condition after being shot in Sheldon, Illinois, Sunday night.

Illinois State Police confirmed that Corporal Brandon Schreiber, a 5-year veteran, was shot while assisting the Iroquois County Sheriff's Office with an incident Sunday night, WAND TV reports.

Preliminary reports indicated that officers from the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department were engaged in a pursuit of an armed suspect with a hostage.

Police said the pursuit went into Indiana; at which time the Newton County Sheriff’s Department became engaged. The pursuit than came back into Illinois when the suspect crashed in Sheldon.

After the crash the suspect exited his vehicle and the suspect and Corporal Schreiber were hit in an exchange of gunfire. The suspect is dead.
