Dallas Officer Killed, 2 Others Wounded

A Dallas, Texas, police officer was fatally wounded in an ambush attack while still in his patrol vehicle Thursday night. Two responding officers were also wounded, and the gunman was later killed by police after a car chase.

Late Thursday night, a Dallas, Texas, police officer was killed and two additional officers wounded in a shootout with the suspected cop killer. Police were dispatched to an officer in distress call and found a fellow officer had been ambushed and shot while still in his patrol car.

Officer Darron Burks died from his injuries sustained in the ambush.

Kristin Lowman, director of communications at the Dallas Police Department, told 5NBC that responding officers were met with gunfire and two officers were injured in the shootout.

The armed man then led officers on a car chase for about 30 miles, finally stopping in Lewisville about 30 miles from the original shooting scene. After the gunman exited his vehicle armed with a rifle, officers shot him. He died at the scene.

All three wounded Dallas officers were taken to an area hospital. Burks died, another officer was listed in stable condition, and the third was reported by police to be in critical condition.

According to FOX4, Burks was a rookie officer who had left his job as a high school teacher and coach to join the police department. He had served the Dallas Police Department for eight months.
