An Alton, Illinois, police officer and K-9 handler was injured and his K-9 partner was killed in a shootout Thursday morning that also left the suspect shot and killed, police said.
Illinois State Police said the officer, identified by city officials as Officer Allen Averbeck, was taken to an area hospital for treatment for injuries. The Telegraph reports Officer Averbeck was saved from more serious injuries by his body armor.
The K-9, named Odin, was taken to a veterinary facility for critical wounds. The dog was later pronounced dead. Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford said Odin joined the department earlier this year and went to the K-9 academy in February then graduated May of this year, KSDK reports.
The suspect has not been publicly identified. He was reportedly suspected on an earlier shooting, and when spotted by officer, a foot pursuit ensued.
