The NYPD is sending 100 additional police officers to patrol Central Park as crime continues to plague the famed greenspace, according to sources.
The cops will begin canvassing inside the park this week, authorities told PIX11. Forty additional cops began patrolling Central Park Tuesday night, according to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.
In the latest incident, an 82-year-old woman was assaulted on the Reservoir Path at around 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, according to police. The victim suffered nose, elbow, and knee injuries.
Assaults are up 43% while overall crime is up nearly 50% in Central Park. There have been 30 robberies in Central Park this year compared to 10 last year, an increase of 200%, according to the NYPD. Police said migrants are contributing to the rise in crime.
