An officer with the Homewood (Alabama) Police Department is expected to make a full recovery after a man shot at him early Sunday morning in Moody.

Moody police Chief Reece Smith told WVTM that officers were called to the residence, where they found the Homewood PD cruiser had been struck with gunfire. The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Moody police say Brandon Gaines, 30, shot the officer. Officers found him shortly after the shooting carrying a rifle in a wooded area.

Crisis negotiators spoke with Gaines for nearly five hours before he turned the gun on himself. Gaines died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
