The incident took place around 11:15 p.m. on Friday, March 29 . An officer was driving west on a surface street underneath Interstate 5 in a marked patrol car when a rock hit and damaged his patrol car’s windshield. It also destroyed the vehicle’s spotlight.
The officer pulled into a nearby parking lot to inspect the damage. He called his supervisor who arrived on scene to help him inspect the damage, the police department explained.
At that time, a suspect, now identified as 32-year-old Kyle McCord of San Diego, ran up behind the officer “without warning or provocation” and hit him in the head with a skateboard, authorities said. The suspect then took off running, Fox 5 reports.
After being hit over the head, the officer pursued the suspect. He fired at McCord three times, the police department said.
The officer’s head injury led to him withdrawing from the pursuit. Responding officers rushed him to a fire station where he and his fellow officers mistakenly told the firefighters that he had been shot in the head.
The suspect—later identified as McCord—was taken into custody without incident. He was wearing a mask and gloves.
McCord is now facing charges of attempted murder of a police officer and committing a felony while on bond or release. Detectives are still investigating and working to determine if McCord was the same person that threw the rock, police said.
The injured officer suffered a skull fracture, brain bleed, and concussion.
