A Michigan State Police Trooper was killed when he was struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop Wednesday night.
MSP reported in a statement that Trooper Joel Popp, 39, of the Tri-City Post and other troopers had stopped a suspected impaired driver on I-75 in a “curved lane of travel.” An 81-year-old reportedly came around the curve and “struck two patrol cars and Popp,” who was outside his patrol vehicle.
Popp was transported to the hospital where he died. The other driver had serious injuries but is expected to survive.
Popp enlisted with the MSP in 2020. He is survived by his wife Stefanie and a young daughter.
