Florida Deputy Injured in Pursuit Crash Involving Stolen U-Haul Truck

Additional deputies arrived and attempts were made to stop the truck, officials said. The U-Haul truck hit one deputy’s vehicle then continued to drive on, ultimately crashing into second deputy’s vehicle.

A Lee County, Florida, Sheriff’s Deputy was injured in a pursuit crash involving a stolen U-Haul box truck Thursday night.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno said the incident began with a license plate reader hit on the stolen truck.

A deputy initiated a pursuit.

The U-Haul truck was traveling at high speed, Lee County SO said on Facebook.

Additional deputies arrived and attempts were made to stop the truck, officials said. “At that time, the U-Haul made contact with one deputy’s vehicle then continued to drive recklessly, ultimately striking a second deputy’s vehicle head on, causing injury to the deputy upon impact,” Sheriff Marceno said.

The driver was arrested. He was identified by law enforcement as Michael Kurpaska, a registered felon.

The injured deputy was treated and released at a local hospital.
