One Lafayette officer is recovering in the hospital and another was treated and released after they were shot early Saturday morning. The suspect was also wounded. A child was killed in the incident.
Lafayette officers responded at 2:14 a.m. to a call of a fight in progress, the Lafayette Police Department reports in a press release.
The call reportedly came from a residence. When officers made contact with the people they believe were involved, they came under fire, police say.
Two officers were hit by gunfire and wounded. One officer was shot multiple times. A third officer shot back at the suspect.
The suspect and three other people were wounded during the incident, including two children. One of the children later died at the hospital.
