Earlier this month, Glendale, AZ, police officers responded to an animal welfare call. When they arrived on scene they found a “tired German shepherd” swimming in the canal and unable to save itself, the Glendale Police Department reported on Facebook.

“Officer Sorenson took immediate action by removing his ballistic vest and gun belt and entering the canal to try and rescue the dog. The dog was skittish and did not immediately come to Officer Sorensen,” police said.

Another officer devised a plan to tempt the dog with food. Officer Downey’s wife had packed him some freshly baked pumpkin muffins for his patrol shift, he handed one of them to Officer Sorensen who was able to use the muffin as a tool to get the dog close. Officer Sorenson then grabbed the dog by the collar and pulled the pup out of the canal.

The dog was reunited with his owner who lived nearby.
