After making a traffic stop, the nature of which was not called in to dispatch, the officers returned to their cruiser with Marshall’s license. It is believed that the suspect got out of his vehicle, approached the officers, and shot Fettig twice.
Bowens radioed for help, but the suspect returned and fatally shot him, says Cmdr. Craig Schwartz of the Detroit PD Major Crimes Division. He says Bowens was struck nine times before his gun was taken away from him and the suspect drove away.
Police found the suspect’s driver’s license in the police cruiser along with 22 empty shell casings at the scene.
