The activities will begin on May 13th with the Annual Candlelight Vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial that evening. The event is expected to draw crowds of approximately 15,000 people. Several other activities are planned for the week, including seminars sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors, Law Ride, National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies Pipe Band March, National Peace Officers Memorial Day Service, and the Wreathlaying ceremony.
Between 1900 and 1998, 14,010 federal, state and local law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty, according to the NLEOMF. Preliminary data indicates another 130 officers lost their lives on duty last year.
