The 1995 Honda Civic was the vehicle most reported stolen in 2004, according to a nonprofit group that reports insurance crimes.

In its annual “Hot Wheels” report, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), based in Palos Hills, Ill., says motor vehicle theft was down 1.9 percent in 2004, at 1.2 million vehicles reported stolen, compared to 2003. The West was the only region that posted an increase—3.2 percent—over its 2003 number.

“The slight decrease in auto theft is a positive sign. Now all of us in the fight against vehicle theft and insurance fraud must ensure that we continue the momen-tum and bring this national crime problem under control,” says Robert M. Bryant, President and Chief Executive Officer of the NICB.
