Police told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that they confiscated 294 replica guns last year. The replicas were used in crimes ranging from assault to kidnapping.
In one case, two men were arrested for shooting replica handguns from a moving vehicle, imitating a drive-by shooting.
“You can imagine the kind of hysteria and fear that creates,” Dep. Chief Gerlicher told the council.
Under current law, it’s legal to carry replica guns in the city.
Other cities that have banned the replicas include Honolulu and Beaverton, Ore.
The Minneapolis proposal is expected to pass, as it drew no opposition at a recent public hearing.
