A man and a 16-year-old boy face charges of robbery for trying to knock over an Australian biker club outside of Sydney.
At the time of the robbery, the Southern Cross Cruiser Club was meeting in the back room of the club. The two would-be robbers then reportedly barged into the club armed with machetes. Police say the robbers ordered the patrons to lie on the floor and demanded money from the staff. Fifty motorcycle enthusiasts in the back room heard the commotion and decided to end the problem.
"They (the robbers) thought they had the upper advantage with their knives and their machetes," Jim Webb, night supervisor of the club, told CNN. "They didn't expect to run into a bunch of guys carrying chairs and tables."
The younger of the would-be robbers was hog-tied with an electrical cord and held for police. The older crashed through the club's glass door to escape the bikers and fled. The door automatically opens with the push of a button. A suspect was arrested by New South Wales police near the club.
A third suspect was waiting out in a car and drove away when the bikers threw furniture at him. He is still at large.
Both would-be robbers were charged with attempted armed robbery and with wearing a disguise—in this case a mask—while committing an indictable offense.
"These guys were absolutely dumb as bricks," leader of the bikers Jerry Van Cornewal told CNN. "I can't believe they saw all the bikes parked up front and they were so stupid that they walked past in."
