Arpaio's Deputy Chief Files Discrimination Suit
The first and only Mexican-American promoted to deputy chief in the Sheriff's Office has filed a federal race and age discrimination complaint against Maricopa County for allegedly withholding his pay raise. Paul Chagolla, an outspoken critic of the Board of Supervisors and the county's administration, says he was promoted from captain nine months ago, but he is being retaliated against.

The first and only Mexican-American promoted to deputy chief in the Sheriff's Office has filed a federal race and age discrimination complaint against Maricopa County for allegedly withholding his pay raise. Paul Chagolla, an outspoken critic of the Board of Supervisors and the county's administration, says he was promoted from captain nine months ago, but he is being retaliated against.
"They were given ample opportunity to correct the situation and have chosen not to," Chagolla said Monday. "We are getting close to a year now, and we have not got this rectified."
Documents obtained from the Sheriff's Office show Chagolla was promoted Nov. 17, and his hourly pay should have risen from $44.89 to $50.91 an hour, the entry-level pay for a deputy chief.
