Choosing from a trio of finalists, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has selected Charlie Beck, a deputy chief within the Los Angeles Police Department, as its new chief, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Beck, who will replace the departing William Bratton, was a pivotal figure in the department's reshaping after the Rampart scandal, and will lead the LAPD during a time of lower crime rates and shrinking budgets.
The 56-year-old Beck is described as a "32-year LAPD veteran with strong support from rank-and-file officers and civil rights advocates alike."
