The Raleigh (N.C.) Police Department said farewell to 8-year-old William Bunn, who had dreamed of becoming a police officer before he died of cancer.

Raleigh PD's Officer Graham Witherspoon met the boy a year ago, in April, during a visit to his school. The two struck up a friendship, and Bunn said he liked the officer's cool cap, crisp uniform and job description. Bunn had asked Witherspoon what he does, and the officer responded, "Simple. Catch the bad guys."

The boy became the department's first honorary officer on July 11. He was buried with full police honors.
