Law enforcement officials said they have no plans to revise police procedures following several officer-involved shootings this year. Those who review those shootings said it's a sign of the times.
The latest police shooting at the Flying J truck stop follows another in the Northeast Heights Thursday night, making it the second officer-involved shooting in less than a week -- and the the eighth this year.
It makes some wonder why so many -- and why now.
"New Mexico is consistently in the top ten of the states with the highest number of assaults on police officers," said Albuquerque Chief Public Safety Officer Darren White.
White also said there has been an dramatic increase in assaults on police officers nationwide this year.
Matthew Archuleta has been reviewing the shootings as chairman of the Police Oversight Commission for three years. He agrees crimes are getting more violent.
"The fact that crimes become more violent, and if the police have to use force, it just shows that there's more of a violent situation in our community," said Archuleta.
