Police have identified the two men who ambushed and killed Sgt. Joe Bergeron while he sat in his cruiser after responding to a carjacking call.
Bergeron was a 26-year veteran of the Maplewood (Minn.) Police Department, and was praised as a generous husband, father and officer who worked hard to protect his community without seeking the limelight, Minnesota Public Radio reports.
After the two suspects shot the officer, a jogger saw Bergeron fatally wounded and used the officer's radio to call for help. A manhunt then ensued, which led to the capture of Joshua Michael Martin.
The second suspect, Jason John Jones, was shot by an officer during a physical scuffle during which Jones struck that officer with a blunt instrument, fracturing his eye sockets and nose.
