During his first press conference as the Dallas Police Department's new chief, David Brown said he would reach out to officer associations and consider changes such as easing a restrictive pursuit policy, imposing term limits on specialized assignments such as SWAT and gang units and accepting crime tips via social media, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Brown was the second-in-command to retiring Chief David Kunkle, who has accepted a part-time consulting job with the Caruth Police Institute at the University of North Texas at Dallas.

Brown, who is known to take officers to task in meetings, is inheriting a department that's seen six years of falling crime statistics.
