Two men who apparently stole a Meals on Wheels truck this morning pretended to offer free food to an elderly Detroit couple before attacking them and driving off with the pair’s car.
Laverne and Blow Harris, both 73, told police they were in their driveway on Longfellow near Rosa Parks Boulevard just before 10 a.m. when the two men pulled up in the truck — stolen, police said, from the northeast side of the city — and told them they were delivering meals.
“I said, ‘We don’t get Meals on Wheels,’” Laverne Harris told police after the incident. One of the men, she said, told her: “‘We’re giving them away today for free.’”
While handing Blow Harris a packaged meal and asking if he wanted utensils, one of the men hit him in the head and knocked him down. The other man hit the car door into Laverne Harris.
