The Dallas police officer at the center of an excessive-force investigation stemming from dash-cam footage of him repeatedly striking a suspect with his baton has been fired by the department, Chief David Brown announced.

Officer Kevin Randolph, along with Officer Paul Bauer, may face misdemeanor assault and official oppression charges, as well as felony charges of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence in connection with the Sept. 5 incident involving Andrew Collins.

Dash-cam video shows Randolph striking Collins with his baton, after the offcers stopped the motorcyclist following a pursuit.

A third officer, Henry Walter Duetsch, may also face a felony charge for tampering with evidence, by turning his dashboard camera away from the incident.

Chief Brown asked the FBI to open a civil-rights probe into the incident, and held a press conference, where he quoted Sir Robert Peel, one of the men known as the father of modern policing.

"I am appealing to the calmer voices of the community and the police department to examine the evidence in this case, and the department's investigative thoroughness and transparency," Brown said.
