Fremont (Calif.) PD's officer Todd Young, 39, is recovering, after a second surgery and an outpouring of support from northern California law enforcement officers who have donated blood and delivered hand-written cards, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Authorities believe Young was critically wounded on Friday by Andrew Barrientos, 20, of Union City, who shot him twice in the pelvic area, after the officer tried to arrest the suspect during a gang task force investigation.
Barrientos was arrested Saturday evening within feet of the U.S.-Mexico border, as he attempted to flee the country.
After the shooting, doctors needed 60 units of blood to stabilize Young, which triggered an outpouring of support, including two Richmond PD officers who received permission to donate while on duty.
Young is faring better, however he has significant bladder and stomach injuries, the Mercury News reports.
