Lakewood (N.J.) Police Officer Chris Matlosz was fatally shot three times while questioning a pedestrian who opened fire at close range, reports the Star-Ledger.
Matlosz, 27, had stopped his patrol car in a residential neighborhood and begun questioning the subject when the man pulled out a handgun and opened fire shortly after 4 p.m. A manhunt is now underway for the gunman. A $40,000 reward has been offered.
Matlosz was said to be one of the agency's most popular officers and "very proactive," Lakewood Chief Robert Lawson told the news outlet.
Matlosz, who was engaged to be married, joined the Lakewood PD in August 2006. He was hired as an Englishtown PD officer in 2004 and was lauded for his role in a multi-agency drug raid in 2005.
