The Arlington (Texas) Police Department is reviewing its policy of how officers are dispatched to domestic disturbance calls, following the fatal shooting of Officer Jillian Smith, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Smith, 24, was fatally shot, after responding to the Arbrook Park apartments to take the statement of Kimberly Deshay Carter, who called 911 to report an assault by her ex-boyfriend. With Carter's 11-year-old daughter in the room, registered sex offender Barnes Samuel Nettles returned to kill Carter and Officer Smith, and then turned the gun on himself.
The call was deemed lower priority because Nettles had left the scene, police said. Staffing levels were not a factor in the decision, a department spokeswoman said.
