An officer with the Riverside (Calif.) Police Department was fatally shot while investigating a hit-and-run accident involving the driver of a big-rig truck, the agency announced.
Officer Ryan Bonaminio, a four-year veteran of the department and a U.S. Army veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, responded to a hit-and-run call at 9:45 p.m. Sunday at the 60 Freeway and Market Street.
Officer Bonaminio attempted to pull over a semi-truck believed to be involved in the accident, which failed to yield to the officer's lights and siren.
After pulling over in front of Fairmount Park, the driver fled on foot into the park, and Officer Bonaminio pursued him on foot. Backup officers arrived to find Officer Bonaminio laying on the ground with a gunshot injury.
He was transported by paramedics to Riverside Community Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Detectives with the department's Robbery Homicide Unit are currently investigating the shooting and have not identified the suspect.
