Jurors chose the death penalty for one of two men who broke into a Connecticut home three years ago of endocrinologist Dr. William Petit and raped and murdered Petit's wife and two daughters before torching the house, reports the New York Post.
Steven Hayes, 47, reportedly smiled when the sentence was read. He was convicted on Oct. 5.
His alleged co-hort Joshua Komisarjevsky is next up to face trial.
During the Hayes trial, excerpts of Komisarjevsky's diary entries were read aloud into testimony in which the 26-year-old wrote that he "lost control" while beating Dr. Petit with a baseball bat before murdering Petit's wife and two daughters. He wrote that he started to "enjoy it," while committing the murders.
