When asked to enter a plea in his trial of the ambush killing of Officer John Pawlowski , Rasheed Scruggs stood and said, "I'm guilty of first-degree murder, and I'm sorry," reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Common Pleas Judge Renee Cardwell Hughes then asked the jury to leave the courtroom. He then asked Scruggs, "You have no defense? You knowingly and intentionally shot an officer in cold blood."
The trial now enteres the sentencing phase, where Scruggs could face the death penalty.
Pawlowski was a five-year officer who initially responded to a 911 call from a taxi driver who said a man had threatened him on Feb. 13, 2009. Scruggs allegedly ambushed the officer, firing a round that struck Pawlowski in the neck area just above his body armor.
